Although my son is completely non-verbal - says not a word - he's found ways to communicate that work for him. He has a consistent yes-no response, makes choices from communication boards and uses some sign language.
As a mom, I wait hopefully for the day when I might hear his sweet voice say "I love you Mom" but I know this is not a reality. But about six months ago, he surprised me. I signed I love you to him and he responded. He signed "I love you" back to me! OK, it was more like a sign approximation - hand/fist to heart - but it counts! And the best part is that he reserves this special sign just for me. He doesn't use it with his Dad or sister, just with me.
On this Mother's Day, and the other 364 that we care for our special kids, I encourage you to express your love for your special kids in a multitude of ways. You never know what and when your message will sink in and you'll receive that long awaited sign in that special language of love.
Happy Mother's Day, Randi
